Durban beachfront gym removed

The gym which was installed in South Beach in March 2017, was badly damaged and was said to pose a risk to people using the equipment.

THE outdoor gym at the Durban beachfront has been removed, reportedly as a result of being damaged through misuse.

Councillor Nicole Graham said the gym, which had been donated by the National Department of Sports and Recreation, was installed in South Beach in February 2017. It has since been so badly damaged that is said to pose a risk to people using the equipment.

Graham said she became aware of the issue earlier last month when a resident contacted her to say the equipment had been pulled out and was seen piled up nearby.

“I was told that the equipment had to be taken out and the municipality was looking for new equipment to install at a later stage. It is such a pity as this was the biggest outdoor gym in the city and was a very popular attraction for residents and beachgoers and was used regularly,” she said.

Graham said she was concerned that the equipment hadn’t lasted long, compared to others in the city which had been installed years before and were still in working order.

“Perhaps there was a different supplier for the beachfront equipment. I just hope the Department will reinstall the gym equipment soon and that people using it will look after and take pride in it by using the equipment responsibly,” she said.
