New fence for Durban’s infamous Burman Bush

“This fence will also be erected in memory of Simon Miliken, who loved Burman Bush dearly.” - Martin Meyer

WORK on the long-awaited new fence to be erected around the perimeter of Morningside’s Burman Bush, is due to start this month.

The fence has been on the cards since last September, following the tragic death of resident and nature-lover, Simon Miliken.

At a meeting with the media and municipal departments at the time, Head of Parks, Recreation and Culture, Thembinkosi Ngcobo, confirmed that the City had allocated R5 million to replace the fencing enclosure at Burman Bush which was in a serious state of disrepair.

According to ward councillor Martin Meyer, six contractors have been appointed to erect the clearview-type fence which will be 5km in length.

Each contractor will be responsible for roughly 800 meters of the fencing.

“Unemployed youth in our ward have been identified to work on the project, so the project is also providing employment for locals. The whole project is scheduled to last 10 weeks, to be completed hopefully by 10 June. I am very excited that the fence is finally going to be erected and I am sure this is yet another step in improving our Burman Bush. The clearview fence will go a long way to improve security in the park as well,” he said.

“This fence will also be erected in memory of Simon Miliken, who loved Burman Bush dearly and would have wanted us as a community to do everything in our power to restore Burman Bush and make it a safe place for our residents to use,” said Meyer.
