NPO opens school in Umbilo

The school has a creche for children aged one to four, as well as Grade R, Grade 1 and Grade 2 classes.

RESPONDING to the need for additional schooling in Umbilo, non-profit organisation (NPO) Child of Africa is opening a school in the area.

Richard la Colombe, who runs the NPO, said he made the decision to open a school after he saw a lot of children from the foundation phase travelling long distances from their homes to attend school in other areas.

“I wanted to extend the opportunity for local children to attend school close to home. It is such a value for children to be at school, especially in the foundation stage, and I saw the need in our area. I spoke to the Department of Education, and now we are standing,” he said.

The school, named Child of Africa Preparatory and Primary School, is based at 7 Suffolk Place, Umbilo, and will have a creche for children aged one to four, as well as Grade R, Grade 1 and Grade 2 classes. The classes will be small and therefore there will be a lot of focus on the children and their education.

Registration opens on 2 May.

“There is still space available at the creche, and we have 10 children starting with us on 2 May,” said Richard.

The school offers aftercare from 1pm to 5pm during the week, as well as a homework centre and extra lessons in all subjects, focusing on Grade 1 to 7.

To register, visit the school or contact sa.childofafrica@gmail.com or 078 524 9578.
