REGISTER FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING EXHIBITION 17 – 19 May 2019, Durban Exhibition Centre

The eThekwini Municipality has been hosting the Sustainable Living Exhibition for the past 8 years.

THE city is calling on the green industry to register for the Sustainable Living Exhibition, the city’s popular greening event. The recent drought in the country and the cyclone in Mozambique has highlighted the impact of climate change on the planet and on society in general. These events has made climate change a very real phenomenon and communities now realise the severity of climate change and the impact it could have on society.

The eThekwini Municipality has been hosting the Sustainable Living Exhibition for the past 8 years in an effort to promote a culture of green, sustainable, environmentally friendly lifestyles. The city is now getting ready to host the 9th exhibition and is inviting all business to showcase their sustainable or green products and services at the Exhibition. This is a unique, multifaceted event that showcases everything from water harvesting and energy efficiency technologies to organic gardening and recycling options.

“Sustainability is about ensuring that our earth’s resources are conserved for to meet the needs of future generations,” explained Chumisa Thengwa, Deputy Head for the Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department

She added, “More than half the world’s population live in cities, and urban centres face immense pressure due to that. There is more pressure on water resources, infrastructure, energy, and our natural environment due to the increased population. We all need to do our part to ensure that our cities remain sustainable and resilient as we move forward.”

The exhibition aims to highlight the many innovative things that ordinary people are doing to ensure that we are a resilient city that can withstand the impacts of climate change.

Climate change impacts

As a coastal city, it is predicted that Durban will suffer from sea level rise. This will impact our infrastructure and investment on the beachfront in years to come. The city is looking into ways of mitigating the impact that sea level rise will have on the city. Being a coastal city, plastic pollution is affecting our oceans and marine life. This is a worldwide phenomenon, but our oceans and marine life is something that we must protect as they serve a vital role in creating a natural balance.

Globally, climate change will also impact on food security and health due to environmental impacts. The Exhibition hopes to raise awareness on these impacts and what each one of us can do to mitigate and adapt to our changing world.
