Durbanites empowered at book and art fair

The Fair featured over 200 authors, visual artists.

THE Articulate Africa Book and Art Fair was a success with more than 40 seminars held at the Durban Exhibition Centre from Wednesday, 11 to Saturday, 13 April. Themed Expect the Unexpected, the fair featured more than 200 authors, visual artists and gastronomists from across the African continent.

Thembinkosi Ngcobo, eThekwini Municipality’s Head of Parks, Arts and Recreation, said he was pleasantly surprised with the number of people who attended the fair. “I was a bit nervous, leading up to the festival, as I was concerned people would not attend. But there has been so much interest, which excites me. I was also pleasantly surprised to see how many young people stayed for the depression discussion on Friday. It showed there clearly are problems many youth are facing and these are manifesting through depression. There needs to be a solution. I don’t think Friday’s session addressed all their needs.”

The festival ended on Saturday afternoon with the launch of KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dlomo’s autobiography, My Journey to Robben Island.
