Trucks set on fire

UMBILO SAPS is investigating two cases of arson which occurred in Umbilo.

Security guards go on strike

POLICE are looking into strike action by security guards at UKZN Howard College.

Makaula said on 5 April at 8am security guards continued to strike after being served with a court order.

“They continued to disrupt classes by emptying bins on the premises and in lecture rooms. Mi7 security was on campus, manning the entrances and Public Order Police were instructed to act if necessary. There were no injuries, however there was damage to a guard house and boom gates,” she said.

Men arrested for armed robbery

TWO men were arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on 3 April.

Capt Makaula said at around 11.40am, two men entered Dokkies pretending that they were there for their matric results.

“They signed the register and entered. A few minutes later they came out and informed the security that they were told to come back at 2pm. While explaining that, one of them took out a firearm and the other took out an Okapi knife and threatened the two guards, demanding their firearms. The female guard told them that they did not have firearms and they threatened to shoot them,” she said.

The men then demanded cellphones and fled the scene. Umbilo Crime Prevention Unit members were informed and they did a stop and search in the vicinity and apprehended the two suspects fitting the description given.

“The suspects were searched and an unlicensed firearm with four live rounds and the Okapi knife as well as the guards’ cellphones were recovered. They were taken to Umbilo SAPS,” she said.

Murder case opened

A CASE of murder was opened at Umbilo SAPS last week following a house robbery in Carrington Heights.

Makaula said on 2 April at around 8.15pm, four suspects, two armed with firearms, broke into a home where they held up the occupants.

“They ripped off a 49 inch Samsung television from the wall and also took two cellphones and jewellery before fleeing the scene after the complaint’s mother-in-law pressed the panic button. It is alleged that the complaint’s husband and father-in-law followed the suspects. Later the complaint received a call from her husband telling her that they had been shot by the suspects and that they were in King Edward Hospital. The father-in-law was shot in the neck and chest and his son was shot in the left upper arm. The father in-law died in hospital,” said Makaula.
