Join young Durban scout on community project

4th Durban St Thomas Scout Group is appealing for volunteers and sponsorship for a project to revamp the community service centre at Berea SAPS.

THE community is invited to volunteer its time or sponsorship of materials to revamp the community service centre at Berea SAPS during the March school holidays.

Rios Pillay from 4th Durban St Thomas Scout Group has initiated the project as a wasy to give back to the community.

“Community service, giving back to the community and being involved as youth to make a difference is a big part of the Scouts movement,” he said, adding that the project is also part of his service towards achieving his Springbok award.

He plans to get a group of youth and volunteers together to be involved in uplifting the community by helping in a place that serves the community.

“I hope to make a lasting difference, so with my Springbok award, I can look back and know I, along with my team, did something meaningful,” he said.

Berea CPF chair, Nicky Burke, said Rios contacted her to get involved. She said she was glad to partner with Rios and suggested a revamp of the community service centre at the station as it was the first place the community went to interact with the police, and a revamp would also encourage the officers to be proud of their workplace.

“We are calling out to the community to volunteer with this project. We can all make a difference by doing something small and this will also encourage residents to take pride in the police station,” said Nicky.

The group aims to paint and clean the community service centre, replace the doors, stain the chair arms and generally make the space look good.

“If we get lots of volunteers we can do even more,” said Nicky. She said sponsorship was also needed for items including cleaning detergent, paint, brushes, turps, polyfilla, poster frames and signage.

The project will run from 18 or 19 March. To volunteer or for sponsorship, contact Nicky on 083 449 8555 or Capt Poobalan Naidoo at Berea SAPS on 079 696 3573.
