Be a woman of courage

The bi-annual Women of Courage 2019 event is on 13 March.

THE Union of Jewish Women Durban hosts the bi-annual Women of Courage event on Wednesday, 13 March at the Durban Jewish Centre.

The line-up of speakers will inspire and uplift the audience with their incredible stories of overcoming, against terrible odds, and being able to move on to a better life.

Speakers include Dr Nomusa Shezi who is the first black woman to graduate as a neurosurgeon in KwaZulu-Natal. As a young child, Nomusa’s dream was always to one day be in a position to give sick people hope and nurse them back to good health. With her recent graduation, Nomusa’s dream has finally come true.

Karen Landi managed to escape a horrific hijacking incident after being viciously assaulted and terrorised. Karen refuses to be a victim and she refuses to change the way she sees our country and its people because of three men who chose to violate her.

Shana Kagan, from Jedi Tedi has been to hell and back. In 2016 her son Jed was diagnosed with CRPS, a chronic pain disease. Over time, Jed has done a number of motivational speeches about CRPS and his experience with beating the illness. In Jed’s honour, Shana created a non-profit organisation called Jedi Tedi.

Sue Jacobson is a prominent, very active member of the Durban Jewish community. Sue will tell her story of a colourful, interesting childhood and having to deal with a devastating blow when her best friend, husband and father to her children, was shot and killed in an armed robbery at work. Sue will share with us having to face these challenges head on and overcoming much pain and heartache.

In 2010, Marilyn May founded Atlantic Hope, a safety house for vulnerable babies, providing temporary and immediate placement within a safe and loving environment in Cape Town where the babies are fed, kept warm, and given affection in a stable environment.
