Berea SAPS welcomes new CPF chair

Berea SAPS said partnerships can help curb crime in communities.

BEREA SAPS has commended its partners who assist in fighting crime in the area and welcomed the new Berea Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson.

“Because of our close working relationship with forums, watches and the CPF, we are reducing crime in our patrol area. Community Policing Forums were set up to involve all local stakeholders and key organisations in local policing. They meet regularly with the officers in charge of the local police station and discuss problems and solutions to crime in their area. The adoption of community policing does not only turn around the crime situation, but changes the way the SAPS addresses crime,” said Capt Poobalan Naidoo from Berea SAPS.

He said for community policing to be successful, it was important for the community to realise and accept that they also have a social and moral obligation to assist and support the SAPS in the fight against crime, and other forms of social disorder.

“With the support and involvement of the community, the police will be in a position to meet the safety and security needs of the country,” he said.

Naidoo welcomed resident, Nicky Burke in her position as the chair of the Berea CPF. Burke said she was aware that there was a lot of work to do.

“I have had a good relationship with the station for the past eight years and have worked in various roles in the community, in trauma, as a CPF member, an executive member and a security member, so I have been involved in a lot and have a good overall knowledge of the area,” she said.

Nicky said she is passionate about the area and the community and as a resident and owner, has a vested interest in the community.

“I believe if everyone does their little bit, together we can make a difference,” she said.
