Durban raid nets abalone worth R72 840

A 28-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of abalone, line fish, east coast rock lobster, oysters, mussels, langoustines, crabs and prawns.

A planned raid on a business premises in Pixley Kaseme Street (West Street) Durban on Thursday, 21 February netted seafood with an estimated street value of R86 000.

According to Captain Nqobile Gwala of the SAPS Operation Phakisa was carried out by SAPS, SARS, Customs, Immigration Officers and members of the Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries at noon.

A 28-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of abalone, line fish, east coast rock lobster, oysters, mussels, langoustines, crabs and prawns. A search was also conducted at another shop where more abalone was found packed inside a fridge at the business premises.

The total estimated value of the recovered abalone is R72 840.

The suspect was due to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday facing charges in terms of the Marine and Living Resources Act.
