Denis Hurley Centre hosts AGM

There's a lot planned for the Denis Hurley Centre's AGM on 23 February.

THE Denis Hurley Centre (DHC) hosts a stakeholder meeting, equivalent to an AGM, each year to feed back to its supporters, staff, beneficiaries, volunteers and partners on the previous year. Usually it is held around the date of Archbishop Hurley’s death anniversary on 13 February, however this year it will be on Saturday 23 February at 2pm.

Director, Raymond Perrier, said: “This will in fact be exactly three months since the death of our founder Paddy Kearney. We encourage the community to join us as we have an informal opportunity to share stories and memories of Paddy.” he said.

The formal report back will start after tea at 3.30pm. She and Raymond will also be available to answer questions and talk about plans for DHC.

“A key part of that is fundraising. We need to raise R4.7 million to cover our existing operations for 2019, or R13 000 per day. For the scale of what we do it is not a lot, but it is still a significant fundraising goal,” he said.

Part of the meeting will also be the presentation of the second Bishop Barry Wood Award for Outstanding Service. Anyone involved in the DHC is entitled to nominate a staff member and/or a volunteer to be considered for the award.

The day will end with a Memorial Mass in honour of Archbishop Hurley at 5.30pm in Emmanuel Cathedral. Presider and preacher will be Durban’s soon-to-arrive Archbishop Coadjutor, Rev Abel Gabuza. On Sunday, 24 February, memorial masses will continue in the cathedral (at 7.45am, 10am and noon) with Rt Rev Neil Frank as presider and preacher, the new superior of all the Oblates in South Africa, the religious order that can claim both Archbishop Hurley and Bishop Barry.
