Residents form coalition against illegal trucking activities

The eThekwini Trucking Coalition was formed at the end of 2018.

ETHEKWINI communities have formed a coalition to protest against illegal trucking operations in the city.

At the end of 2018 a group of community activists, ward committee members and Councillor Chris Pappas established the eThekwini Trucking Coalition, which is being nurtured by the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA).

The establishment of the coalition came after a public meeting in Clairwood where residents from Clairwood and surrounding communities got together to voice their concerns over the increasing difficulties they are facing in relation to trucks and illegal land uses associated with the trucking industry.

Some of the issues raised at the first meeting included lack of enforcement capabilities by Metro Police, lack of political will to protect communities, lack of compensation for communities that have been left victim to unregulated development, parking and traffic management, industrial creep, long-term back of port solutions, short-term management issues, bylaw enforcement and mobilising community support and getting input. The coalition is not against trucking in the city but rather against illegal trucking and associated activities.

Some of the founding members come from communities in and around Berea, Overport, Seaview, Bluff, Clairwood, and Merebank, and interest has also been shown by groups from Umbilo, Hillcrest and Chatsworth.
