Umbilo blue container finally moved

"The blue container has finally been removed, after over a year of fighting."

THE blue container which was dumped on the side of Hutchinson Road last year has finally been removed.

Posting on social media on Thursday, Councillor Mmabatho Tembe confirmed that the container had been removed after a year of fighting to have it moved.

Tembe was informed earlier this year that the investigation into the container and its removal would have to be relaunched as the officer assigned to deal with its removal had been transferred to another region.

Tembe said the owner of the container had initially wanted to place it inside Kenneth Gardens to trade, however the Kenneth Garden’s committee had turned down his request.

He then had the 12-meter long container placed outside Natal Settlers in Hutchinson Road last March. At the time, she asked Metro Police to investigate if it was legal and upon investigation, it appeared the owner had a legal permit and a letter confirming he could place it in the area.

Tembe went on to contact the head of Business Support and requested the office investigate the matter, as she had not been consulted as ward councillor and the owner had not received a letter of consent from her. Afer conducting an investigation, Business Support concurred that it was not legal.

Tembe also reported that the delay in removing the container was due to the fact that Metro Police didn’t have a vehicle capable of removing such a large container.
