Umbilo SAPS warn Polo drivers to be alert

There were four incidents including attempted theft of a VW Polo, hijacking and theft of a motor vehicle.

UMBILO SAPS urges drivers of VW Polos to be alert following a spate of thefts over the weekend.

Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS said there were four incidents including attempted theft, hijacking and theft of a motor vehicle.

“In the first incident on Friday, 11 January, a man was parked in Teignmouth Road, Umbilo. As he approached his car he noticed three men tampering with it. They made off in a white Polo sedan,” she said.

She said in a second incident on the same day, a VW Polo was stolen from a property in Savage Road, Glenmore, at 9pm.

“On 12 January at 7.30am, a man was hijacked by three men armed with guns in Oliver Lea Drive. Shots were fired and the driver was shot in his right shoulder. The hijackers got away in his VW Polo,” she said.

In the final incident on 12 January, a man was parked in his VW Polo in Sphiwe Zuma Avenue where he was talking to a friend.

“They were approached by two men driving a Toyota Etios. The men pointed guns at the complainant and his friend who they ran away from the vehicle. Shots were fired but there were no injuries,” she said. The hijackers made off with the complainant’s vehicle.

“Drivers are urged not to loiter or sit around in their vehicles. Be aware and alert at all times,” she said.
