Police host awareness campaign

Durban Central SAPS conducted crime awareness campaigns in the central business district.

DURBAN Central SAPS Social Crime Prevention and Communications Unit conducted crime awareness campaigns in the CBD with newly appointed constables on Friday, 5 January.

Const Zanele Khomo said the Gem Schoolwear uniform shop was targeted. Shoppers visiting the store were sensitised on different crimes that are prevalent during the back to school period.

“Pamphlets were also distributed to motorists providing them with safety tips regarding theft out of motor vehicles and theft of motor vehicles. Motorists were encouraged not to leave their valuables such as laptops, bags and cellphones in plain sight since this attracts criminals. They were also advised to check their doors when locking their vehicles in order to avoid remote jamming scams,” said Khomo.

She said the police urged students and the community who are looking for places to stay in newspapers or in online advertisements to be vigilant and not to deposit money prior to any agreement.

“Students are urged not to carry large amounts of cash while looking for schools and not to pay anyone who promises to assist them with regards to tertiary arrangements,” she said.

Khomo encouraged the community to report if they suspect any criminal activities are taking place. Contact the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or visit the nearest police station.
