IEB learners achieve outstanding results

The class of 2018's matric results revealed that an impressive 98.92% of learners had passed the senior certificate exams, up from 98.76 in 2017.

INDEPENDENT Examinations Board (IEB) learners have every reason to celebrate. The class of 2018’s matric results revealed that an impressive 98.92% of learners had passed the senior certificate exams,  up from 98.76 in 2017.

A total of 11 514 full-time learners and 858 part-time sat down to write the final exams last year. Of them 90.65 per cent qualified for entry to study a degree, which was up from 88.5 per cent in 2017.

A number of KZN learners achieved outstanding results.  Locally, Clifton’s Ashir Parusnath got seven distinctions. Durban Girls College’s Andrea Plumbley and Antonia Grindrod both scored eight distinctions and Cenelle Gounden  achieved seven distinctions. They were placed on the IEB List of Outstanding Achievers countrywide. This means that they achieved within the top five per cent of learners in six or more subjects and scored 80 per cent or more for Life Orientation. They are among 61 pupils from 41 schools nationally. The school’s Humairaa Khalid also achieved eight distinctions.

The closing date to apply for re-marking is 10 January. Results from re-marking will be released on 6 February. The closing date for learners who qualify to enrol for the supplementary exam is 15 February.

The Department of Basic Education will announce the state national matric pass rate this evening, Thursday 3 January and results will be released tomorrow, Friday, 4 January at 6am on its website.
