Durban beaches draw huge crowds

More than 276 132 people visited various Durban beaches in the run up to the Christmas eve weekend.

THE festive season is in full swing with hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers enjoying all that Durban has to offer.

According to a media release by eThekwini Municipality, during the week, 18-20 December, more than 276 132 people visited various Durban beaches and around 507 children were separated from their guardians or parents. Beach Buddies and Child Minders issued 19 044 wristbands during the week which contained details of parents/guardians.  Approximately 23 rescues were carried out and 156 people received first aid treatment mostly for blue bottle stings and minor cuts.

Beach and City maintenance is on track with staff working daily to ensure a litter-free environment. Approximately 1 045 770 tons of litter was collected and disposed of at designated depots around the City. The Durban Solid Waste clean-up team is working in three shifts:  06h00 – 14h30, 15h00 – 23h00 and 22h00 – 05h30. There is a staff complement of approximately 413 people. During night cleaning, patrons are urged to vacate the beach area to allow staff to thoroughly clean the area and have it ready for the next day. Beach visitors are reminded that the beach is a bottle-free zone.   Swimming hours are strictly from 6am to 6.30pm and no swimming is allowed at night or where lifeguards are not in attendance.
