Durban beachfront in need of last-minute fixes

Councillor Nicole Graham is in communication with the City regarding issues at the beachfront, including the Rachel Finlayson Pool, beachfront showers and continued sand pumping onto the beaches.

WITH just days to go before hoardes of holidaymakers hit Durban beaches for the first December long weekend, the City is being urged to carry out last-minute repairs on the beachfront in preparation for the festive season’s bumper crowds.

Beachfront showers are reportedly still broken despite an appeal from local councillor Nicole Graham to the City in October, requesting that the repairs to showers be carried out as a matter of urgency. Graham said she had been informed that there were delays in appointing a contractor to do the job.

The Rachel Finlayson pool which has been closed for a few holiday seasons is scheduled to open shortly.

Paving has remained unfixed for the past eight months.

North Beach resident, Khudaija Jamal also expressed concern over the state of the beachfront, pointing out that paving near the paddling pools had yet to be fixed.

“I first noticed work at the site eight months ago. The paving was dug up and was surrounded by green mesh and now it is in the same state, months later. I have contacted eThekwini, but nothing has been done about it. With visitors coming to the city, it’s really not on,” she said.
