Call for city to attend to issues at Umbilo pool

Councillor Mmabatho Tembe has put pressure on the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture to address issues at Tesoriere pool in Umbilo.

WITH the approach of the festive season, ward 33 councillor, Mmabatho Tembe, has put pressure on the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture to address issues at Tesoriere pool in Umbilo.

Tembe said she had contacted Gopaul Pillay, manager of aquatic safety (pools) at eThekwini Municipality, following an oversite visit at the pool. Tembe said as much as the pool looks clean, there are some concerns she felt needed to be addressed.

“The grass cutter broke when cutting started and no one returned with a new one or to finish the job. This needs to be done around the grounds of the pool. The male and female change room walls need to be looked at as rains have damaged the ceiling and the walls and require rennovating. Some of the shower heads are missing in the female toilet and need to be replaced and the disabled toilet and geyser are also not working and require fixing,” she said.

Councillor Mmabatho Tembe said rains had damaged the ceiling and the walls in the change rooms and renovations needed to be done.

Tembe also noted black rubbish bags that had not been collected at the entrance to the pool and felt they posed a health hazard. She said a fresh coat of paint was also needed as the building was very old. She also addressed the fact that the female cleaners do not have change rooms and use abandoned disabled toilets to change in and requested the matter be investigated.

“With the warm weather approaching, visitors to the pool will increase and these concerns need to be seen to. I have received correspondence from Mr Pillay at the department, who was shocked that these issues hadn’t been attended to. He said it was unacceptable as these issues were raised a year ago. He has apologised and said he will now take responsibility to ensure concerns are attended to as soon as possible,” she said.

Councillor Mmabatho Tembe said the rubbish at the entrance to the pool needed to be removed.
