WW1 centenary commemorated

The centenary of the end of World War One was commemorated on Sunday, 11 November.

SUNDAY 11 November marked the centenary of the end of World War One, also known as the Great War.

In commemoration of this historical event the SA Legion organised a number of activities at the weekend including its annual Poppy Day collection and a global piping eventi which took place at the same time at various international destinations honouring the signing of the Armistice.

A civic Service of Remembrance was also held at the Durban Cenotaph where chairman of the SA Legion Durban branch Bryan Dore, said the end of the Great War on 11 November was an experience beyond belief for the people who were part of it. “We are privileged today to live in a free society because of the efforts of those who have gone before us to fight for freedom on various fronts,” he said.

After an address by Rev Clive Jacobson, the Last Post was sounded, followed by the firing of the guns, a two minute silence and the Reveille, before wreaths were laid by foreign consuls, military and veteran organisations.
