Three arrested for Durban robbery

The suspects approached a business premises at Pixley kaSeme Street where they threatened the staff before they stole new cellphones and cash at gunpoint.

THREE men were arrested by officers of the Public Order Police attached to the Provincial Task Team and charged with armed robbery and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Lt Col Thulani Zwane from provincial SAPS said the officers responded to reports of a robbery at Pixley kaSeme Street in the Durban on Monday morning at 10.45am.

“It is alleged that three suspects approached a business premises and threatened the staff before they stole new cellphones and cash at gunpoint. Police and security personnel were alerted and a description of the suspects was given to them,” he said.

Zwane said the suspects attempted to climb into a minibus taxi on Yusuf Dadoo Street after fleeing the scene on foot.

“They were apprehended and detained. An unlicensed firearm, cash as well as a motor vehicle key were found on the suspects. They are due to appear in the Durban Magistrates Court where they will face charges of armed robbery and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition,” said Zwane.

On further investigation at the scene police officers found a vehicle parked near the business premises. The vehicle key found on the suspects was used to open the vehicle and a bag of suspected stolen cellphones were found in the trunk.
