Four-year old complaint still unattended, says resident

A home owner in Riley Road, Overport, has had no joy after four years of reporting a broken pavement in the road to the municipality.

RESIDENTS are encouraged to contact their ward councillor if issues they report to the municipality are not addressed in an adequate time frame.

This comes after a homeowner in Riley Road, Overport, reported a broken pavement on the road to the city four years ago and is still waiting for it to be repaired. The man, who asked not to be named, said the pavement had been washed away by water from a pipe which extends down from Stephen Dlamini Road.

“I’m sure there was a drain at this point initially, but the pavement had a concrete slab over the top and the pavement was in place. Somehow the slab has been washed away and the pavement has been left open for years. Sometimes grey or green water flows out, which could be a health hazard,” he said.

The rubble from the pavement has been left on the pavement next to the gully and grass and shrubs are now growing in the gap in the pavement.

“It is dangerous as this is a busy road. I recently saw an elderly couple walk into the road to avoid the broken pavement. I have taken photos and handed these over to the city but nothing has happened. I have reported the issue via the telephone frequently and I have been down to City Engineers offices twice. I have done everything I can to get it fixed,” he said.

Responding to the complaint, Councillor Chris Pappas said: “It is unfortunate that the issue has not been resolved by eThekwini over such a long period of time. When residents do encounter such issues I encourage them to get hold of me so that I can try and assist. It is important that residents send me the municipal reference number in order to follow up on their reported issue. There are some issues that take longer than others to resolve especially those involving some form of prosecution. However, there is no excuse for simple tasks not being completed within a reasonable amount of time.”
