Suspect convicted to 15 years for Durban CBD hijacking

A hijacker was arrested and convicted in the space of a month.

DURBAN Regional Court sentenced and convicted Bhuti Welcome Mngadi, (27), to 15 years imprisonment for car hijacking.

On 1 October at about 2pm, a woman was driving along Devonshire Place in the Durban CBD when she was approached by Mngadi who pointed a firearm at her and instructed her to move to the passenger seat.

“The vehicle drove away and the woman managed to jump out of the moving vehicle in Aliwal Street. A case of hijacking was opened at Durban Central. On the same day at about 2.05pm, the vehicle was traced and located and Mngadi was arrested. A firearm was recovered and a cellphone which was identified by the victim as hers was also found in Mngadi’s pocket,” said Const Zanele Khomo from Durban Central SAPS.

“Through an investigation it was discovered that Mngadi was out on parole. He then made several court appearances until 22 October where he was sentenced and convicted to 15 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances,” said Khomo.

The case was investigated by Detective Lethiwe Ngidi.
