Baby Jamie: 20 year sentence for abusive mum

Baby Jamie’s mother was sentenced 20 years for her murder.

PATRICIA Kershnee Ishwarlall was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for the murder of her 3-year-old daughter, Baby Jamie, in the Durban High Court on Thursday.

Last week, Ishwarlall was convicted of murdering Jamie by beating her on her head with her high-heeled shoe in 2014. This followed abuse where Jamie was beaten, starved, burnt with cigarettes, had chilli powder put in her nappy and was tied to her bed at night.

Ishwarlall was also convicted of other charges relating to ongoing abuse she and her mother, Salatchie Basanich, who later died in prison, inflicted on Jamie and some of her siblings.

Taking into account that Ishwarlall has already spent four years in jail awaiting trial, she was sentenced to 33 years, but with some of the sentences running concurrently with others, she was handed an effective 20-year sentence.
