Rape crime awareness

Const Zanele Khomo from Durban Central SAPS said people must always be alert when visiting pubs or clubs.

DURBAN Central Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence Unit appeals to the community to be vigilant to avoid incidents of rape or sexual assault.

Const Zanele Khomo from Durban Central SAPS said people must always be alert when visiting pubs or clubs and be cognisant of safety tips.

“People must arrange for transport that will take them and fetch them to return home. Do no accept lift from strangers. It is advisable that people go in groups to avoid being isolated and easily targeted or must be accompanied by a friend that is not drinking,” she said.

Khomo said people should never accept drinks from people they do not know, and drinks must be served sealed or must be opened in their presence.

“Never go to toilet or outside alone. This refers to a current case under investigation where a 23-year-old victim was raped in a pub toilet,” she said.

Khomo urged people to carry contact numbers that will assist police in case something happens.

“Be alert and be safe,” she said.
