Durban High Court finds baby Jamie’s mum guilty of murder

Three-year-old Jamie died from child abuse at the hands of her mother and grandmother.

THE mother of three-year-old Baby Jamie, who died from child abuse at the hands of her mother and grandmother, will be sentenced this week after being found guilty of murder in the Durban High Court last week.

Patricia Kershnee Ishwarlall will be sentenced for murder and other charges relating to the abuse of the little girl and others. Her mother, Salatchie Basanich, who was also facing charges, died in prison awaiting trial.

Jamie suffered extensive injuries and was beaten, starved, burnt with cigarettes, had chilli powder put in her nappy and was tied to her bed at night, and died in November 2014 after being beaten on her head by Ishwarlall and Basanich.

Jamie’s older brother reported the abuse to someone at his school and neighbours also reported their concerns.

Sentence will be passed on 8 November.
