Schools perform for Drama Association

The 75th birthday celebration of the Speech and Drama Association of South Africa was held at Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre.

PRINCIPALS, teachers, parents, sponsors and friends of the Speech and Drama Association of South Africa, joined the executive committee and adjudicators for an entertaining evening of performances by nine KZN schools recently.

Guest artists Marion Loudon, Iain ‘Ewok’ Robinson and Rowin Munsamy added to the evening’s entertainment which celebrated the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Speech and Drama Association by Professor Elizabeth Sneddon.

Appropriately, the Showcase Evening was held at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. Performances of poetry, mime, movement, monologue and story-telling were presented by pupils from Tree Tops School, DPHS, Sherwood Primary School, Port Natal Hoërskool, Highbury Prep School, St Mary’s DSG, Ethembeni School, North Crest Primary School and Crawford Prep La Lucia.

Chairman of the Association, Dr Mervyn McMurtry, outlined the history and growth of the Speech and Drama Association Festival since 1943, in which over 20,000 pupils throughout KZN now participate annually. Presentations of poems from the earliest syllabuses were presented by current members of the Executive Committee.

Guests enjoyed refreshments in the theatre bar after the performances.
