Durban’s ‘tough love’ teacher wins big

Raeesah Khan, a teacher at Sastri College in Greyville, won in the Woolworths Teachers Day Competition.

SASTRI College teacher, Raeesah Khan has won a national Teachers’ Day competition. The school, which is situated in Greyville, Durban won the KZN High School category.

Khan, a teacher with extraordinary compassion and the willingness to go the extra mile to support at-risk students, was nominated to the Woolworths Educational Programme and MySchool’s 2018 Teachers Day Competition by one of her learners, Ntombikayise Mkhize.

This year, a record-breaking 33 835 entries were received from school children across South Africa who felt inspired to submit a 200-word motivation about the teacher who has made a life-changing difference to them.

In her motivation letter, Ntombikayise, a Grade 12 learner, related how Ms Khan rescued her from dropping out of school when the trials of her life had become completely overwhelming.

With a winning combination of empathy and ‘tough love’, Ms Khan kept her focused on learning and achieving, and even helped Ntombikayise to start her own small business to help provide for her family.

Khan won a laptop, a R5 000 Woolworths gift card and enjoyed an all-expenses getaway with a partner to Sandton, Gauteng. Ntombikayise Mkhize received a R5 000 cash prize and Sastri College was awarded a R10 000 cash prize.
