Centre hosts wellness workshop

Women’s wellness workshops with seven partner organisations.

THE Denis Hurley Centre partnered seven organisations to deliver a two-day Women’s Wellness workshop which helped 120 women.

The women received advice on nutrition from DUT students, mental wellness from the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), information on addiction from AA and Al-Anon, and were educated on cervical and breast cancer from DUT and the Centre’s UK partner, Two Weeks.

Thanks to the Islamic Medical Association, the women also benefited from some simple health checks for weight, diabetes and blood pressure. About 70 of the women who attended also took advantage of the free pap smears provided by CANSA. All were interviewed by DUT medical sciences students as part of wider research into health awareness among women.

The day ended with hand massages by mother-and-daughter team, Charmaine Bestel and Danielle Simpson from Imbali Blends. Each woman received a wellness goody bag with items donated by DUT, City Lodge Hotels and Spar.
