Parenting skills the focus of I Care workshop

I Care hosted a career guidance and parent workshop on 3 October.

THE I Care Hope Centre hosted a career guidance and parent workshop last week to provide parenting skills and career guidance and support for I Care clients.

Participating stakeholders included the Department of Social Development, Department of Home Affairs, Epilepsy Foundation of South Africa, Durban Child Welfare, Mangosuthu University of Technology, Pax College, Corobrick and Hibiscus College.

Renuka Moodley a social worker facilitated a topic on parenting skills and how to deal with children’s behaviour. Renuka also provided parents and children with a counselling session for those who have different needs.

Dumisani Ntuli from Mangosuthu University of Technology talked briefly on the faculties offered at the University, how to apply through CAO, the importance of applying and choosing a right institution early and discussed on the responsibility of parents and children in choosing the right career.

Pax College, Hibiscus College and Corobrick provided parents and children with information of what the training centres offer, how to apply to these colleges and requirements for entry.

Mbongeni Magagula from the Department of Home Affairs facilitated a session where he talked about the importance of having a birth certificate and an identity document. He provided insight on difficult cases that I Care comes across such as the application process of children who do not have parents and gave suggestions on issues such as the loss of documents.

Zodwa Mkhize from Epilepsy Foundation educated on epilepsy, the myth around the disease and what parents and children can do around people with epilepsy.

I Care is a non-profit organisation that is dedicated to finding a solution to the challenge facing street children in South Africa.
