Umcebo branding takes a new turn

Umcebo Design has two Durban University of Technology Public Relations students helping to work on projects and gain experience.

UMCEBO Design has partnered with the Durban University of Technology’s Public Relations Department and will mentor and train two students as part of its Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Programme 2018.

The WIL programme is aimed at final year students and gives them an opportunity to engage with and gain experience in a work environment.

Nino Sithole and Bongekile Makhwanazi joined Umcebo about a month ago and have been honing their social media and writing skills as well as working on sourcing blocks for the upcoming Intellectual Property Exhibition Block Project.

Excited to be working with Umcebo Design, Nino said he had worked as an intern for other organisations but was hoping that Umcebo would give him a platform to gain innovative ideas and skills and give him the confidence to make public relations a full time career.

“Working with Umcebo Design has been a great journey so far, although we are limited by the duration of the programme. It’s a great opportunity to get to know people and be part of the community which Umcebo works closely with. I have been able build up a list of contacts by networking and liaising with working individuals and it has helped me to put the theory that I have learnt at university into practice in the working environment,” he said.

For Bongekile, working for Umcebo is an opportunity to gain extensive knowledge and experience.

“By participating in the WIL Programme I am being given a great opportunity to share my skills and knowledge and to start putting theory into practice. I am excited to work on the remaining tasks I will be engaged in for the remainder of the two month period I will be working with Umcebo Design,” she said.

Besides its two new public relations interns, Umcebo Design has also been given a new look with a new logo. “Mike McFadyean has come up with our new branding using the original chameleon, but evolving and changing it up. The result is an updated modern logo using contemporary colours. As we work in the craft community, we want to be cutting edge and move with the times, so the new branding shows this,” said Robin Opperman of Umcebo Trust.

He said the mural at Umcebo’s premises in Brents Avenue will also be revamped in November using the new chameleon branding.
