GLENWOOD Community Watch (GCW) has noted a large increase in petty crime in its footprint which has kept Umbilo SAPS, security companies and GCW, among others busy in recent weeks.
According to chairperson, Guy Perrins, the petty crime included mostly fence hoppers stealing goods, car break-ins and muggings for cellphones, can be attributed to an influx of vagrants that have moved into lower Umbilo area between Alan Paton, Umbilo Road, Rick Turner and Lamont Roads and Masizi Kunene (South Ridge) Road.
“GCW is a volunteer group of residents who get together in an organised manner to protect the local community. We organise patrols at least every second day depending on crime stats. The challenge we have is that we have lost a few patrol members for a variety of reasons and are down to just over 15 active patrol members and need to build this capacity up to spread the load, as the current situation is not sustainable,” he said.

“Glenwoodians can help by being an active member on patrols, by being aware of what is going on in the community, by reporting incidents at Umbilo SAPS and by donating monthly to the GCW, to pay for expenses including decals, pamphlets, jackets and radio license costs. Company sponsorships are also appreciated,” he said.

GCW will have a community meeting in Bedford Gardens on Saturday, 13 October (weather permitting) at 2pm.
