PENSIONERS living in Berea, Morningside and Umbilo are cautioned to be aware that conmen operating in the area claiming to work for eThekwini Municipality, are still active.
Last month, two pensioners contacted Berea Mail after being duped by the men, saying they had lost much-needed cash through the scam.
In both instances, the women were contacted by a man, calling himself Andre du Plooy, who said he worked for the municipality.
They were told that a man by the name of Kale would visit them regarding pensioner rebates, and they were instructed to give him the reference number he supplied them before letting the man onto their properties.
The man also mentioned the name of a woman, Natasha, who allegedly worked at the office.

Last week, Berea Mail received two more calls from residents saying they had been contacted by a man calling himself Alex.
The men said they had seen the article in Berea Mail and that the modus operandi was the same, however the people’s names had been changed, with Kale now being referred to as Ricardo, and Natasha as Anastasia.
Pensioners are urged not to fall for this scam. Any representative of the municipality will have an ID tag with a photograph, ID or employee number with the municipal logo.
If residents are suspicious about any person contacting them, they can call to confirm with the Municipality’s 24-hour Call Centre on 080 1313 111.
