A heritage of caring

Lazarus House is a safety net for women and children.

DA councillors from central Durban put Heritage Month’s theme of caring into practice last week when they visited Lazarus House in Umbilo.

Councillor Chris Pappas, chairperson of the Central Durban Constituency described the work being done at Lazarus House as inspiring. “Central Durban Councillors put out a call to their members for clothes, food and sanitary items. We are grateful for the support that we received, every item will help someone to get back on their feet,” said Pappas.

“The city should be partnering with NGOs like Lazarus House and supporting them with grants in aid and rates rebates. In addition, the most sought after support that NGOs who deal with homelessness, vulnerable groups and refugees need are buildings. There are many abandoned buildings both private and public that could be given over to NGOs and FBOs so that they can assist the city with the challenges it faces,” said Pappas.

Lazarus Home in Umbilo is home to women and children, all victims of abuse. The former commercial building is owned by businessman and former chairperson of the now defunct Manning Rangers, Chico Lazarus, and will stand as a memorial to his parents. The home was officially opened last month by Cardinal Napier along with Fathers Vitalis Loryue, Sylvester David and Sean Mullin.
