Training programme benefits residents

Through the ward 31 skills programme, more than 85 people have been provided with short term employment opportunities.

RESIDENTS of ward 31 who do not have a matric qualification but wish to study further are encouraged to apply for a skills training programme.

Councillor, Chris Pappas said 70 people from the ward had been sent for skills training through the programme. “Private institutions and technical colleges have trained young people in administration skills, as well as plumbing and electrical skills. We have also successfully hosted a small business development workshop and will plan more of these in the short term,” he explained.

According to Pappas more than 85 people to date have been provided with short term employement opportunities through the programme. He also confirmed that he would continue to ensure local infrastructure projects employed local residents.

Currently there exists five openings for people who do not have a matric but who wish to study further. Anyone interested in applying for the programme should contact Pappas at ward31@ethekwini.org.

“We have forged a good relationship with the Sydenham Training College which assists people in achieving government certified matric certificates free of charge, regardless of your age. They also offer other short courses,” he said. Anyone interested can contact Nomathemba on 073 393 6627.
