Embury students host Olympic fun day

Embury Institute for Higher Education hosted an Olympic Fun Day at Austerville Primary.

THE Physical Education and Sport students from Embury descended on Austerville Primary School in Wentworth loaded with energy and enthusiasm recently.

After months of planning and fundraising the Grade 2 and 3 learners at the school took part in their very own and unique Olympics. On Wednesday, 12 September the students facilitated a day filled with fun, songs, laughter and competitive activities.

The learners were divided into five “worlds” to participate in the competition – Animal World, Sea World, Cartoon World, the Four Elements and Forest World – which represented the five rings of the Olympic symbol, and the learners proudly wore their colour printed shirts to indicate which ‘world’ they were from.

In true Olympic fashion the learners entered the arena by uniting their torches for the games to begin.

The three-legged race, pool noodle javelin, egg and spoon race, hockey and soccer dribbling, and ring toss were some of the activities that got the ‘worlds’ on the score board. The learners moved from one event to the next with a few dance breaks and team war cries in between.

Trophies were awarded in five categories, namely the Winner of the day, Spirit of the day, Best support, Most determination and Teamwork. All learners (athletes) received a certificate, medal, golf shirt and goodie bag. A scrumptious tea time and lunch break kept the learners’ energy levels high to ensure top performance.

The joy on the faces of the learners was reward enough for all the hard work put into the project.

The third year students at Embury thanked all sponsors, especially Spur and other role players who contributed in making the fun day a successful and memorable occasion.
