THE public is warned to be aware of suspects pretending to be police officers in the Durban CBD and surrounding areas. Durban Central Police Station’s Const Zanele Khomo said anyone approached by a police officer should ask the policeman to identify himself.
“An officer will have an appointment certificate which has the officer’s photo and an SAPS emblem on it. People must ensure the name on the appointment certificate matches the name on the officer’s uniform. If an officer is not in full uniform the person must ask that they proceed to the nearest police station to verify the officer. The police officer should also not be alone in a vehicle,” she said.

Khomo said people leaving banking institutions should not allow people who identify themselves as police officials to take them to their unmarked police vehicles. She said no investigations are carried out by policemen on a road.
“The police vehicle must be identified by the name of the station and the registration number. We have received some complaints from victims who have been robbed by suspects identifying themselves as police officials. We urge the community to be aware of this and to report it if they come across such criminals,” she said.
