School receives helping hand

Hirsch's Springfield Park celebrated Arbour Week and National Read A Book Day with Sparks Estate Secondary High School.

A TEAM from Hirsch’s Home Stores Springfield Park and NPO iThemba Labantu headed to Sparks Estate Secondary High School to celebrate South African Arbour Week and National Read A Book Day.

Lindsay Starkey, of Hirsch’s Springfield Park, said they identified Sparks Secondary as a school in need of community help to motivate and uplift its learners. The school also needs help maintaing the school building and property.

Hirsch donated a hibiscus tree to the school as the first addition to its new reading garden in commemoration of Arbor Week. The school also recently opened a libray.

Director of iThemba Labantu, Shaeida Marcus, said the main task at hand was to get books for the learners who have a passion to read and learn but sometimes lacked the means to do so. Hirsch’s took on this plight and the Hirsch’s team as well as customers collected 300 books for the school library as a community initiative that formed part of National Read a Book Day.

“I can’t believe how excited the learners were to start reading these books, the joy on their faces was amazing,” said Lindsay.
