A NATIONAL crisis has been declared by People Against Petrol and Parafin Price Increases (PAPPPI) following the Central Energy Fund announcement that petrol prices are set to increase by less than 5c after an initial 25c proposed hike for September.
Despite claims of reducing the increase, PAPPPI convenor Visvin Reddy reinforced his call for mass demonstrations across the country on Friday, 28 September. PAPPPI remains steadfast in calling for the resignation of governing members responsible for fuel prices.

PAPPPI reported that on 6 July, Minister of Energy Jeff Radebe was due to outline a plan to deal with the impact of rising fuel costs on South Africa that has 55% of people living below the poverty line. However, no proposals have been presented.
Frustrated at the failed promise of potential solutions, Reddy claimed that petrol should cost no more than R10 a litre as SASOL fuel is made locally. Adding, “the department wants us to believe that it’s providing relief to South Africans. This is far from the truth. We can expect massive hikes next month as this pricing model calculates fuel prices based on international fluctuations.”
