One-two finish for creative Durban students

DUT student Hannah Smith won first place in the Number One Mageu Art & Soul challenge.

LAST month, Number One Mageu embarked on a search for South Africa’s freshest and most exciting design talent. Entrants were challenged to create a highly unique design for the Number One Mageu’s iconic banana packaging.

DUT student Hannah Smith won first place in the Number One Mageu Art & Soul challenge earning her R10 000 and and an internship with The Hardy Boys creative team. Runner-up, Rapule “Pule” Mathonsi from Durban, won R5 000 for his inspired package design.

The competition received over a 100 entries but voting fell to 10 finalists selected by members from The Hardy Boys creative team Creative Director Kevin Parry and designer Clinton Myeni, the Number One senior brand manager Aamina Shaik and DUT lecturer Frank Kalala. In the end, of the 14 700 votes only 97 separated Smith and Pule.

Smith described her design as a celebration of life with, “jazzy characters, soulful faces and a coupling of art and photography; this is a showcase of how each unique individual has their own unique, individual flava. Just like Number One Mageu.”
