Durban radio DJ, a high frequency achiever

DYR's DJ Sam Favour was recently named The KZN Young Achiever Of The Year in radio.

NATURAL born speaker, student and DJ, Sam Favour, always knew he had the ability to influence people and was confident when he submitted his demo to Durban Youth Radio.

Sam is in his final year at Mangosuthu University where he is studying public management and economics.

“I decided to study this to be able to get into the public sector and improve mechanics of public service and service delivery as a whole. When I was a first year student I took up leadership roles and realised my gift for public speaking. I sent a demo to the radio station last August and that is where my journey began,” he reflects.

DJ Sam Favour started with the graveyard shift but station recognised his talent and quickly moved him to a weekend show a few months later.

In June, he has co-hosted with Adam Knight on a prime weekday show. Still unnamed, the duo calls the show a “chameleon” covering Business Mondays, Health Tuesdays, Tourism Wednesdays, Government Thursdays and Entertainment Fridays.

Sam explains, “each show features a specialist speaker and we aim to empower youth to be educated and change society for the better,” laughingly adding, “along with some good music!”

Due to his success, he was nominated by the public and was recently named The KZN Young Achiever Of The Year in radio at a function at the Durban ICC.

“It was amazing to have won, and even more special that a man I really look up to, Alex Mthiyane from Gagasi FM also won an award on the same night,” he beamed.

Between his degree and radio presence, Sam has clear goals, “I hope to be scooped by a big radio station like ECR or Gagasi and my long-term goal is to be a spokesman. I am now just enjoying radio and trying to be as influential as possible and to create positive vibes among the youth.”

He said he does enjoy reading which he does to improve his vocabulary and to motivate himself noting, “I grew up in Kenville, which is a deprived environment and people really struggle to make it or to have opportunities. I was fortunate to be able to get through university and to make something of my life.”
