INCIDENTS of land invasion in Durban over the weekend that resulted in an official being shot have been vehemently condemned by eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede.
Speaking at an Executive Committee meeting last week, she said land invasion, whether on private or public land, must stop. “A Land Invasion Unit official was shot while trying to execute his duties while another official was struck on the head by a rock. Other officials sustained minor injuries while around three police vehicles were damaged,” claimed Gumede. She continued, “we wish our injured members a speedy recovery.”

A case of attempted murder was opened by the Municipality regarding the circumstances surrounding the entire incident which is being investigated by the South African Police Service. An internal investigation will be launched by the Municipality with consideration to the violent upheaval.
“We hope that those fuelling these invasions will be arrested. Land invasion is counter revolutionary as it disrupts government’s plans of redistributing land. The land will be returned to the people in a legal and peaceful manner. We have confidence in our Constitution and Parliamentary process which seeks to deal with the land in question,” instructed Gumede.
