Century milestone for Durban resident

Durban's Paul Jacobs celebrated his 100th birthday last week.

A HEALTHY lifestyle with plenty of exercise has been the secret to Durban centenarian Paul Jacobs’ longevity.

Paul celebrated his 100th birthday with a special tea party with family and friends at his retirement complex, Eden Crescent, in Durban on 7 August.

Born and raised in Johannesburg, Paul spent 80 years of his life in the City of Gold before moving to Durban. He has been a resident at Eden Crescent for the past 16 years.

Paul worked as a structural engineer before his retirement and was married to his wife, Doreen, who died three years ago. The couple raised a daughter, Frances, and a son, Benjamin. Paul is blessed to also have four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

“I’m very excited to have my family celebrate with me. My son arrived from London on Monday and my grandson Yaron is coming with his five children to spend my birthday with me,” he said.

Paul attributes his long life to the fact that he never smoked, and that he avoids eating fats. He also was a sporty man who played tennis, squash, golf and table tennis – left handed!

“I’m very fortunate with the medication that is available today as it has made my life a lot easier,” he said. Paul wakes at 5am each day to do yoga, boasting that he can do an exercise that not too many others can, the shoulder stand. He also drives his mobility scooter to the beachfront every morning.

“I go to exercise on the outdoor gym at the beachfront. I have found it has helped my walking a lot and I can get up from my chair very easily! I like to get out and about as much as I can and enjoy my independence,” he said.

Frances said her father was always telling her about different exercises she can do for every ailment imaginable. “My father is remarkable! He enjoys doing things with us and we see him often. My sister-in-law also stays at Eden Crescent, so she also looks after him,” she said.

Paul said it was very special to have his family with him on his special day and that it was going to be lovely to have his great-grandchildren around for two weeks.
