Berea SAPS warns of scam

Berea SAPS warns of a scam related to student aid cards.

BEREA SAPS urges students to be aware of a scam related to student aid cards.

According to Capt Poobalan Naidoo from Berea SAPS, a case was reported where student aid cards belonging to students were defrauded.

“People are contacting students who have student aid cards and telling them that they are from the Student Aid Council and require certain personal information from them. After the information is given to the caller their money is used from the card while the card is still in their possession,” he said.

Naidoo warned students not to give any information to people over the phone.

“If they are unsure about who is requesting the information they must call the office who issued the student aid cards. This will prevent the fraud. Under no circumstances must personal information be given to people over the phone,” he said.
