Local artist seeks exhibition space
Charlotte Richmond hopes to find a place where local artists could exhibit and sell their paintings.
A GLENWOOD artist is looking for a space in the area where she and other local artists can exhibit their art.
Charlotte Richmond, a resident at Glenhaven in Esther Roberts Road, said she loves to paint and knows of a few people at the complex who are very good artists, although not well-known. She is hoping to find a place in Glenwood and surrounds where local artists could exhibit and sell their paintings.
“I’ve been painting for years and have either given my paintings away or painted specifically for friends, but to now be able to sell these paintings would be rewarding. It’s so important to have a hobby as it keeps me busy, I can’t sit all day and do nothing! It is expensive to paint or do any hobbies these days, and it would be nice to sell my paintings to be able to buy new materials,” she said.
Charlotte said her interest in art started when she was young. She studied under well-known artist Neville Liss and has always worked in art departments.
“I started working at OK Bazaars in Bulawayo when, in those days, the shops had lovely window displays. I worked there for many years and did the same job at OK in Cape Town. I moved to Johannesburg and did sign writing at the art department at a liquor company and also worked for Douglas Green in Johannesburg later on, a job I did until I retired,” she said.
Charlotte said she used to paint as a hobby when she was finished work. She moved to Durban three years ago and continues to enjoy this hobby full-time.
Charlotte said she loves to paint ‘real things’ such as landscapes, flowers and birds.
“I’m a girly-girl so I like to paint pretty things. I’m not too fond of modern art, it doesn’t excite me,” she said, adding she works with oils, watercolours and pastels.
Charlotte hopes a local organisation will be willing to host an exhibition once every two months, and also encourages other local artists not affiliated to an art group to contact her.
“It’s got to be a fun thing. I hope we can find a place to share our paintings,” she said.
