A Mandela Day campaign to help underfunded university students has been launched.
The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry CEO, Palesa Phili, is challenging business leaders, colleagues and friends to pledge a minimum of R67 to the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Foundation’s ‘Donate R67 for Mandela’ campaign to raise more than R8 million for 20 students to complete their studies at UKZN.
“We have partnered with the UKZN Foundation for this campaign because it epitomises our commitment to the ideals and values Nelson Mandela lived by and will not only honour his memory and raise money for one of the causes close to his heart, but will empower the next generation with the tools to affect social and economic change,” said Phili.
In similar vein, East Coast Radio has teamed up with UKZN and is sending out the same strong message, donate R67 and help academically deserving students at UKZN who remain unfunded.
East Coast Radio broadcast live from the UKZN’s Westville campus from 6am till 3pm on Mandela Day to encourage the people of the province to give generously in the spirit of Nelson Mandela.

UKZN Foundation Executive Director, Prof Anesh Singh said the amount resonates with late President Mandela’s fight for social justice for 67 years. Instead of doing something for 67 minutes, the Foundation has been campaigning for 67 days for individuals to honour Mandela’s famous quotation “Education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world.”
The appeal is to ordinary citizens to give the gift of education to empower UKZN graduates to change the world by donating R67 or more until 31 July.
