Book project helps the needy

IF you have a love for reading and would like to support a good cause, The Denis Hurley Centre is encouraging you to support its new initiatives in Durban.
The Booksellers of Mzansi Project, a new initiative by The Denis Hurley Centre and HashtagBooks, kicked off on 18 June and since then the booksellers have been selling at various places on Sundays such at St Aiden’s and St Anne’s churches.
The project aims to help the homeless earn a dignified living by empowering them to sell books. The project is part of Denis Hurley’s 100 Days for Nelson Mandela Campaign, which urges people to get involved in various upliftment projects to assist the less fortunate.
“We collect unwanted books from organisations and individuals and these are given to our Booksellers of Mzansi. They keep all the money they make from such sales. We also help to secure venues for their booksales. A secondary aim of the project is to promote a culture of reading in Durban. Ideally, we would like to see booksellers on every street in our City. We believe that if books are accessible and affordable, we will be able to encourage more and more individuals especially children to read more,” said Anivesh Singh from Booksellers of Mzansi.
Another event will be the launch of The Casbah Family Recipe Book on Sunday, 22 July at 2pm at the South Africa in the Making Exhibition at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The second new initiative is The Durban Book Fair which was launched on 1 July at Mitchell Park and takes place on the first Sunday of each month, with the next sale on 5 August.
Children are also invited to attend free chess classes in the park at the Durban Book Fair from 10am. The classes will be conducted by chess enthusiast, Dr Hemant Nowbath.

Two books will be launched at the bandstand at the Durban Book Fair – The Goodwill Manor by one of South Africa’s foremost writers ZP Dala, will be launched at 10.30am and The Casbah Family Recipe Book will be launched at noon.
