Car breaking implements recovered, four arrested

"It is alleged that the suspects are also involved in a number of carjacking and robberies committed in the Durban area."

FOUR men were arrested and car breaking implements recovered following a chase and shoot-out with police in Morningside on 5 July.

According to Const Zanele Khomo from Durban Central SAPS, at around 1pm, Durban Central Crime Prevention officers followed up information they had received about suspects who were traveling in a silver Hyundai H1 who were allegedly on their way to commit a crime.

“The vehicle was parked in Lillian Ngoyi (Windermere) Road, Morningside, and the police officers kept their observation. When the police tried to intercept the vehicle the suspects sped off. A chase ensued and the suspects sped towards Glenwood where a shoot-out ensued. The suspects lost control and their vehicle crashed into a tree in Frere Crescent,” she said.

The suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot and the officers gave chase. Four suspects were apprehended and allen keys, a police scanner, police radio handset, remote jammers, various computer boxes, and car breaking implements were recovered.

“It is alleged that the suspects are also involved in a number of carjacking and robberies committed in the Durban area. The suspects will appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court on charges of attempted murder and possession of car breaking implements. Good success by Captain Swart and Constable Moonsamy from Durban Central,” said Khomo.
