Robbers get prison time

Two men accused for business robbery were sentenced to 18 years in prison.

DURBAN Magistrates Court convicted Ntokozo Mkhwanazi, (29), and Sibongiseni Mthimkhulu, (41), of two counts of possession of an unlicensed firearm and business robbery, and sentenced them to 18 years imprisonment on 3 July.

The men were given 13 years for business robbery and five years for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Const Zanele Khomo from Durban Central SAPS said on 16 January 2017 at about 3pm, the men entered a business in Sydenham and held up three employees with firearms, The men took cash and liquor and fled in a getaway vehicle.

“Police responded to a complaint of business robbery and in about 20 minutes they spotted the same vehicle in Newlands East Drive. The suspects were arrested with the assistance of the Dog Unit. Four firearms were recovered in their possession as well as the cash and liquor taken during the robbery,” said Khomo.

The men made their first appearance in Durban Magistrates Court on 19 January 2017 and were granted bail. They made several court appearances until they were convicted and sentenced this month.
