IN an effort to highlight issues of licenses, offshore drilling for oil and gas and challenging the denying of access to the beachfront and north piers, the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) will host a fisherfolk walk on Saturday.
According SDCEA’s Desmond D’Sa, the walk will also draw awareness to the opposition of offshore oil and gas drilling that is set to take place on the coast of KZN.
“Our province is renowned for its beautiful beaches which are also a habitat for a multitude of marine life that makes our ocean a diverse life-giving force. A healthy marine ecosystem is critically important to marine life and to the coastal communities whose economies rely on tourism, fishing and recreational activities. Allowing exploitative industries like Sasol and Eni to violate our ocean will drastically compromise the livelihoods of people as well destroy the beauty and tranquility of the ocean,” said D’Sa.

D’Sa urged everyone in local communities to join the walk. Everyone is welcome to take their families along as this walk is open to everyone who loves the ocean.
“We are asking participants to please wear red. The walk starts at 8.30am. We will meet at the beachfront promenade at Snake Park and we will walk towards uShaka,” he said.
